Summer Movie Series #1: Requiem for the American Dream

City Grace church members watched and discussed the Noam Chomsky documentary "Requiem for the American Dream" as the first of three summer film series gatherings on June 25th.

"I think the screening went great!" said Jeri Kwek, who organized and co-hosted the event with her husband Matthias in their FiDi apartment. "We had a full house and started on time as I expected at 2:30."

The summer film series is a new initiative at City Grace church to explore socially relevant issues and their intersections with its members' faiths.

"It caused people to think about their faith in other aspects of their lives," said Justin Johnson, a member of the worship team.

For some, the movie's topics were nothing new.

"It was an interesting reinforcement actually, confirming a conspiracy theory that there is a shadow power running the government," said Jose Garcia, a City Grace member. "None of it was groundbreaking, but it was an interesting narrative of who the powers were."

Kwek said one thing to keep in mind in the future is that the movie's concepts are heavy, so people need time to properly digest the information.

"I have to give it a little more thought, but I think it would be good to have some sort of deliberate 'feedback/continuation' session so people don't just forget what they learned," Kwek said.

"Overall, I thought it was a great experience and am excited for the next one!"

*Shoutouts to new members Michelle and Xan for coming through!
